Whether you are an avid book reader or a once-in-a-while kind, a bookshelf is essentially one of the most important pieces of furniture to have in your home. It not only stores books, but it also serves as a place to store electronics, photo frames, memorabilia and other knick-knacks of the home. By choosing the perfect one, you will end up using it for years together. So, here a few tips to keep in mind while choosing the right one for your home.

Measurement and Placement-

Measure the area you want to place your bookshelf in. This includes measuring the available floor space, length and width of the adjoining wall. If you are not sure where in the room you want to place your bookshelf, then you can measure the entire room and then decide how much space can be used for the bookshelf. You need sufficient walking space too and don’t want to make the room look crowded. Be ready to move the other furniture around to accommodate the bookshelf properly.

Also, take these measurements with you when you go shopping for your bookshelf and measure the one you like correctly before purchasing it. You want your bookshelf to be the focal point of the room, but you don’t want it to abruptly stand out.

Material, colour and style-

Choose the material, colour and style of the bookshelf based on the current furniture in your room. Wood veneers and plywood are commonly used as they are pocket-friendly. Metal and solid hardwood are stronger but are expensive, hence less common.

Adjustable shelves-

Go for one that has adjustable shelves as you can store anything and not just books. You make like a large showpiece, and the bookshelf could be the best place to display it. So, it is always better to buy one with adjustable shelves. You won’t have a problem finding one as most of the bookshelves come with adjustable shelves. Our favourite are the BILLY bookcases. They are reasonably priced, durable and come with adjustable shelves.

Doors or no doors, consider as per your need-

Open bookshelves can be used from the front and back. So, you could use it as a room divider to create two separate areas in one room. On the other hand, a closed bookshelf or one with doors will keep dust out.
